The Thematic Unit Study Guide uses the H.L. Hunley theme or the CSS David theme to study the the boats and how they operated. The Hunley theme uses the book Confederates Courageous- The Story of the Confederate Submarine H.L. Hunley. The CSS David theme uses the book The Confederate Steam Torpedo Boat CSS DAVID. In both cases, the guide leads the student through an investigation of how and why the boat was built and what happened to it.  You must decide when ordering whether you want the Hunley version or the CSS David version.

The Thematic Unit Study Guide incorporate topics in History, Science, Mathematics, Geography and Social Studies as they relate to theHunley or David and Charleston. It includes student exercises and includes explanations of tides, pressure and buoyancy. It covers mathematical problems and measurements described in terms of the boat, travel and related topics.

 The Guide  supports and reinforces many of the Educational Standards that have been put in place by the South Carolina Department of Education in Language Arts, Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. For list of standards and more details see South Carolina Educational Standards.

Related Internet Sites - As an integral part, the Guide includes addresses of pertinent internet sites that will enhance and elaborate on the various topics to stimulate student interest. These sites have all been reviewed to insure their suitability for classroom use. However, internet sites often change or disappear without notice. A list of the current, referenced internet sites for both the Hunley and the David is available on the Thematic Unit Study Guide Support Page of this this site.

Hunley Preservation Developments - With both Units, provisions are made so that interested teachers, parents and students can see periodic updates on things relating to the raising, preservation and display of the Hunley. There is a special section on the Unit Support Page for this information.

Appropriate Age Groups - This Thematic Unit Study Guide is suitable for presenting information generally for students in grades from fourth through eighth. However, some material will be difficult for younger students without additional help.

Time Needed -Each Unit will require approximately two weeks with one hour of class room time per day. 

Each Topic has a Student Reading Section. The reading sections for the Hunley are from the book Confederates Courageous- The Story of the Confederate Submarine H.L. Hunley. Those for the David are from the book  The Confederate Steam Torpedo Boat CSS DAVID.

There is also a Suggested Activity Section for each Topic. These activities may involve math problems, writing assignments, map reading, measuring and drawing, science experiments, library research or internet research. Depending upon the class, you may choose to omit or replace some of the activities. The Guide is supplied in a loose leaf notebook so that the Reading Sections and Activity Sheets may be easily removed and copied for the class members.


Objectives of this Thematic Unit Study Guide are to:

1. Tell the story of the Hunley and its fatal attack on the USS Housatonic.

Explain and investigate Science topics that were critical to theHunley's operation including tides, currents, water pressure, air, oxygen, carbon dioxide and buoyancy.

Present mathematics problems and exercises in terms of Hunley's size and operation. Includes measurements, velocity calculations and drawing to scale.

Describes the locations of different full size Hunley Replicas on display around the country. Provides information so that student may possibly be able to visit one of these sites and see what the submarine was like.
2. Explain about the recent discovery and recovery of the lost Hunley and the efforts and controversies to raise and display it.

(For the David Version)
1. Tell the story of the CSS David and its attack on the USS New Ironsides.
Explain and investigate Science topics that were critical to theDavid's  operation including tides, currents, and buoyancy.

Present mathematics problems and exercises in terms of David's  size and operation. Includes measurements, velocity calculations and drawing to scale.

Describes the locations of a full size David replica and a large scale wooden David Model on display here in South Carolina. Provides information so that student may possibly be able to visit this site and see what the boat was like.
2. Describes the construction of other David type boats in Charleston and what happened to them.


Potential Users

Public and Private Schools - This Thematic Unit Study Guide is suitable for presenting information for public and private school students generally in grades from fourth through eighth. However, some material will be difficult for younger students without additional help In addition, the open ended nature of the Unit will make it useful to the following:

Home Schooling - The Study Guide has been prepared to be used in a group setting and many of the Student Activities have been written that way. However, the Guide may be used , with almost no change, for an individual course of study. The use of this Unit Study Guide will give the individual student a systematic method to pursue the subject on their own. A special Home Schooling Package is available.

Enrichment Activities such as Gifted and Talented Programs

Adult Literacy Classes - The level of public interest in the Hunley and the David and the practical nature of the Unit Study Guide makes it well suited to classes for adults. Most Student Activities can be used with no changes. Only minor changes are required for the others.

Independent Individual Instruction - Previous experience has shown that there are some students that have an exceptional interest in the story of the little submarine and what has become of it. The material presented in the Unit allows interested students, if desired, to pursue the subject to a depth not possible in a conventional classroom.. It is an excellent way for the student that has a strong interest in the Hunley or David  to become well versed in the subject. The referenced internet sites give a means to investigate the Hunley or David and its related topics to a degree that is limited only by the student's interest.
