Breach Inlet as it appears today.
This narrow tidal inlet separates the Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island. It is two or three hundred yards wide at it narrowest point. There are often severe tidal currents through the inlet. The Hunley was stationed in the protected waters behind Sullivans Island under the protection of the Confederate fort known as Battery Marshall. This was located at the northern end of Sullivans Island right on Breach Inlet. The crew of the Hunley had to navigate and force their way through the currents of the inlet on their attempts to attack the Federal fleet. The Hunley went through Breach Inlet on the way to its final assault on the Housatonic.
